Biennial Interieur 2012 - Kortrijk

Déjà-Vu exhibition by Chris Meplon at the Biennale Interieur 2012 in Kortrijk

Borrowing the expression from Naoto Fukasawa and his eponymous chair with a very familiar look edited by Magis in 2007, the Déjà-Vu exhibition (Curator: Chris Meplon) was showing several series of pieces with similar lines at the Biennale Interieur 2012 in Kortrijk…

Inspiration, copy, coincidence, tribute, trend… Each comes up with his idea to justify such similarities. But the reality is often more complex, even surprising at times, for instance with these two very resembling oversized and wraparound armchairs (Capo by Doshi&Levien for Cappellini and Pod by Benjamin Hubert for De Vorm), which both came out in 2011!

Between ‘descendants’ and tributes pieces, the iconic Thonet 214 chair, designed by Michaël Thonet in 1859, proved to be the star of this show with nearly 6 accompanying creations.

A refreshing exhibition highlighting the multiple connexions the designer maintains with past creation…
